Two Sides of the Same Coin

Zine Book Infographics // Vinyl Dividers Infographics

This project manifested as two different visual solutions, or “two sides of the same coin.” The goal of the project was to use the same data sets to create different outcomes targeted at different demographics: one to persuade and one to inform.

The first “side of the coin” informs and raises awareness of vinyl as a media vehicle for high school and early college students. In depth research revealed that though there is a growing affinity for records, there is not a pervasive familiarity with them because of a lack of nostalgia associated with the item.

This zine contains a stylized reinterpretation of data points reinforcing the resurgence of vinyl in a way that is approachable to a younger demographic. Using bright colors, lyrics, the media itself the message is complete with a record to introduce the audience to the tangible media.

The persuasive side of the data urges baby boomer vinyl listeners to pass on, or hand down the vinyl they have acquired. Research within the data revealed that many LPs that are popular are not newly released music. Older records that are considered timeless and live for years and could be better off shared with younger generations.

Composing data that emulates record covers alongside copy that urges them to “pass it on,” encouraging a cyclical exchange. The outcome is a series of dividers that can be used as part of in-store campaigns. The dividers contain companion stickers on the back to encourage the passage of a personal narrative linked to their ownership of the vinyl as an object. This adds another layer to the collector, sharing the music itself but also the stories behind them.
