Schnoor Typeface Design
Typeface Design // Printed Specimen Book
Schnoor is an original typeface developed exploring the modernization of black letter. Constantly traveling to Germany, the relationship between old and new can be observed many cities, pervasive in architecture, design, and everyday life. Some of the oldest cities inspired the creation of a type that is reminiscent of history reinvented. As a Jewish person, the use of blackletter is reminiscent of a loaded, and negative history that has a deep impact. The goal of the project was to re-imagine the lettering considering the historical context. Through photographic and literary research, key qualities were identified and maintained to create something separate from the loaded lettering that continues to be used today.
The typeface was designed through preliminary sketches and development, using grid architecture to create a level of consistency in width and heights. Experimentations using black letter and consistent calligraphic strokes also helped to enhance the modernizing, creating more artistic curvilinear areas.
The typeface was then expanded into Glyphs, a font design software, so that it can be used seamlessly in design projects. The printed output of the project shown, is a booklet highlighting the unique qualities of the digital font. It is created as a pocket guide for a designer to understand the unique and distinct qualities of the type.
