Dream Journal

Printed Collateral // Data Visualization

The exploration of dream-related data manifests as a Dream Journal. Through data exploration, it became apparent that recurring dreams, as well as the content, should be explored to inform an audience of their prominence. The experience both informs as well as helps document dreams because they are mostly forgotten upon waking. Including open, scientific log pages, a user can explore their dreams in comparison to the data visualized in the collage created illustrations.

Visualizations

Layering the images with the color images of the sky helped to reinforce the data visualizations, dominating the compositions in color with each shifting up as the journal progresses. Each of the dreams being communicated, here, flying, is reinforced with calibration marks on each page as well. The characters fall straddle both reality and emptiness, representing the abstract abyss of some of our dreams.

In order to communicate the data visualizations, imagery was utilized that possessed a dreamlike quality but also edited them to further convey the information. Here, in the cover, color was used to delineate the number of people who experience recurring dreams.

The book is saddle stitched so that it is more personal and handmade. The cover features manipulated text to visually mirror the data contained in the interior visuals. As a private archive for dreams, the aesthetic chosen was a combination of a dream-like quality and a scientific approach to help accentuate the documentation process. Each of the popularities of the recurring dream content is conveyed through a series of images that shift up based on the data. The initial imagery was also inspired by the surrealist movement that in art conveyed dreams and strived to describe them.
