Orlando Bites
Food Kiosk // Print Collateral
The best of Orlando, Florida, is often overlooked by residents and tourists alike because of a lack of awareness and understanding of local culture. To create a deep connection and understanding of place, the development of a holistic experience that would impact both tourist and locals was necessary. Orlando is a geographically large city, segmented by multiple tourist destinations, in addition to being transient. While popular for area attractions, it needs to be appreciated for the community and culture it contains.
The Experience
“Orlando Bites,” is a shipping container kiosk designed as a mobile food experience with a variety of food offerings. The concept was built on connecting cultural and emotional memories to food, as well as “connecting the past to the future.” This would ideally be located at entry points to Orlando, such as the Orlando Airport, bus stops, and parks to promote awareness of diversity and culture through food. The play on words, “Orlando Bites,” was intended to play on both the cross section of offerings and the often-conflicted local resident feelings.
Style
A psychedelic, contemporary visual style of eye-catching colors and graphics were utilized to help draw attention to the kiosk. The illustrations on the side literally showcase the different rotating offerings that are available. In addition to the shipping container illustrations, a local guide and take away was designed to create interest as a promotional item.
The promotional item is a small box containing a local “taste” of Orlando, in this case, a small cookie from a local eatery. The box, with a print on the inside and outside is actually a map that features each of the locations in proximity to the rest of Orlando. Each of the sections of the box can be torn apart as coupons to take to local restaurants and drive traffic to local businesses directly. Considering the goal of the project, it was important to extend awareness beyond a single experience and create ongoing business for the local economies.
